How to Clean Menstrual Cups

Menstruation cups are reusable, and because of this nature they must be cleaned and cared for properly in order to last a long time.

How to Clean Your Cup For First Time Use

Rinse your cup off with water and soap, then place it in a glass or metal bowl that can withstand the heat of boiling water. Boil some water and fill the bowl with it to completely cover the cup. Take the menstrual cup out of the pot after 10-20 minutes.

How to Clean Your Cup During Your Period

Menstrual cups simply just need to be rinsed with water and soap each time you empty out the blood. Avoid fragranced soaps that might irritate your skin or alter the pH level of your vagina. If you are in a public restroom and have a difficult time reaching the sink, you can rinse the cup with a bottle of water or simply wipe it with a clean tissue. If the cup starts to emit any odors, you can let it sit in sunlight for a day.

Menstrual cups are usually emptied out between 2 and 4 times a day. You might want to monitor your flow in case you have to empty out the cup more frequently on your heavier days. Menstrual cups should not be left inside of you for more than 12 hours.

How to Clean Your Cup After Your Cycle

At the end of each cycle, your menstrual cup must be disinfected properly. Let your cup sit in boiling water for 5 minutes before storing it for future use.

Do not store the cup in an airtight plastic container or bag. After drying the cup store it in a cotton bag so that it can ventilate. Most cups come with this included.
